Putin floats summit with Trump and Xi to discuss Ukraine deal
What happened
Russian President Vladimir Putin has proposed that he, President Trump, and Chinese leader Xi Jinping meet next month to discuss ending the war in Ukraine, the Wall Street Journal reported Sunday, citing people familiar with the discussions. Putin floated the idea in an Oct. 9 phone call with Trump, and the Kremlin has suggested holding the talks on the sidelines of the APEC summit on Nov. 18-19 in Shenzhen. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed discussions are taking place, while a senior U.S. official said Trump has not agreed to the summit but could be receptive. The proposal would exclude Ukrainian President Zelensky — a format the Journal notes would be unprecedented and would alarm European allies.

- Energy/oil (XLE, WTI/Brent): a credible peace track would ease the war premium in crude; a Moscow-favorable deal could also unwind sanctions risk
- Defense stocks: a settlement track would pressure the European rearmament / US defense-spending tailwind
- Russian-exposed commodities and diesel: follows directly on the US-Russian diesel deal and sanctions waiver
