MSCI finalizes rules that could remove Strategy from global equity indexes
What happened
MSCI finalized rules, announced Thursday, that make companies classified as 'non-operating' ineligible for its Global Investable Market Indexes. Under the methodology, companies failing a core screen on substantial operating assets face an exclusion screen of five financial ratios, and failing four or more makes a security ineligible. MSCI previously identified Strategy (MSTR) among the companies that would be deleted under the methodology. Strategy shares fell about 3% in premarket trading Friday on the news.

- Strategy (MSTR) — the named company most at risk; passive index funds tracking MSCI indexes would have to sell on removal, and reduced passive demand could tighten the equity-issuance window it uses to fund bitcoin purchases.
- Metaplanet (3350) — Japan-listed bitcoin treasury firm also flagged for potential removal.
- Other crypto-treasury / non-operating names — Upexi named as a potential deletion; Sharplink (SBET), Ton Strategy (TONX), Solana Company (HSDT), DeFi Development (DFDV) placed on a watchlist for potential removal.
- Bitcoin (BTC) — indirect exposure: forced MSTR selling and a harder equity-raise window could slow treasury-company bitcoin accumulation, though index sales affect the shares, not Strategy's bitcoin holdings.
