Google (GOOGL) and Constellation Energy (CEG) announce landmark 3.6 GW nuclear deal; CEG surges ~12-14%
What happened
Google and Constellation Energy announced on Tuesday, Oct 6, a long-term clean-energy collaboration covering 3,590 MW of power in the PJM Interconnection grid. A 20-year power purchase agreement covers 890 MW of new nuclear capacity from uprates (turbine/equipment upgrades) at 11 Constellation-owned reactors in Illinois, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey — equivalent to adding a whole new reactor, enough for about 800,000 households. The deal also includes a 15-year energy supply agreement for an additional 2,700 MW from Constellation's broader fleet, and Constellation selected Google Cloud and Gemini Enterprise under a five-year 'AI for energy' technology alliance to optimize grid operations. Constellation will invest more than $4.3 billion in the plant upgrades; the first upgraded capacity is expected to be delivered in 2028.
