AMD to acquire Fei-Fei Li's World Labs for $8.2B in all-stock deal; Li joins as chief scientist
What happened
Advanced Micro Devices announced Monday it will acquire World Labs, the roughly two-year-old AI startup founded by Stanford professor and ImageNet pioneer Fei-Fei Li, in an all-stock transaction valued at approximately $8.2 billion. World Labs builds 'world models' — spatial-intelligence AI that generates and simulates interactive 3D environments from text, images and video (its first product is called Marble; it recently released a model called Atlas). As part of the deal, Li will join AMD as executive vice president and chief scientist, reporting directly to CEO Lisa Su, with World Labs continuing as a new frontier research group inside AMD. The deal is expected to close by the end of 2026, subject to regulatory approval; the share count will be set off AMD's ten-day trading average ahead of closing. It is AMD's second-largest acquisition ever — only the roughly $50 billion Xilinx purchase in 2022 was bigger — and AMD shares rose about 0.4% in after-hours trading Monday after closing the regular session down 3.6%.

- AMD — acquires the startup entirely in stock, so existing shareholders face dilution; the stock traded down 3.6% Monday before the announcement and ticked up after hours. Nvidia — the direct competitive read: AMD is buying frontier-model insight to challenge Nvidia's grip on AI compute and the emerging 'physical AI'/robotics workload. Broader AI semiconductor complex (Intel, Broadcom, Marvell, SMCI, Micron) and neocloud/AI lab valuations, given the $8.2B price tag on a two-year-old research startup.
