Netflix slides ~5% after hours on weak Q4 forecast despite Q3 EPS beat; cuts 2026 ad revenue outlook (Oct 20)
What happened
Netflix reported Q3 results after the close Tuesday: EPS of $0.87 beat consensus by ~4-5 cents (up from $0.59 a year ago), while revenue of $12.87 billion was in line with expectations, up ~12% YoY — the slowest growth rate in nearly three years. Q3 operating margin of 34.6% beat forecasts, lifted by timing of expenses, with churn improving YoY in all regions. The problem was the guide: Netflix forecast Q4 net income of $2.79 billion and EPS of $0.67, below consensus of $3.07 billion / 73 cents, and said Q4 operating margin will slide to 26% on costs tied to the recent layoffs. Management also cut its 2026 advertising revenue forecast to ~$2.7 billion from ~$3 billion, citing slower-than-expected ad product rollouts. Shares fell ~5-7% in after-hours trading, to around $64-65 from the $68.69 close.
